Summer Brings Danger for Upward Transitions’ Clients

The hot summer months are almost upon us.  For most of us, that means vacations, cookouts and days lounging by the pool, but, for those experiencing homelessness, the summer is a season of peril.

It only takes a heat index of 90 degrees to bring danger and health risks.

Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause severe sunburns, blisters and heat rash which can lead to skin cancer.  Sun exposure can also cause the skin to bruise more easily and lead to injuries.

Extended exposure to heat can cause dehydration, heat cramps, weakness, confusion, dizziness, nausea and headaches.  It can also lead to heat exhaustion and heatstroke.  Left untreated, heatstroke can lead to brain damage, organ failure and death.

Summer is also the time when insects like ticks, fleas and mosquitoes are plentiful.

Tick bites can lead to Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and bacterial infections.  Mosquitoes can bite through clothing and bite sleeping people.

“For our clients experiencing homelessness, there’s little or no shelter from the sun and insects and no relief from the heat,” said Tamara Wood, office manager, Upward Transitions.  “I see clients every summer with very severe sunburns and bug bites.”

To help our clients find a little relief, Upward Transitions is accepting donations for the following items:

  •  Sunscreen (small or travel-size bottles are best).
  •  Insect repellent (small sizes are best).
  •  Sunglasses and/or straw hats.
  •  Socks.
  •  Water.

Upward Transitions also accepts monetary donations designated for purchasing any of these items.  With your help, those we serve can have a safer and healthier summer.
