Event Description:
American Tourist Goes to the Derby is a destination themed event that attracts over 400 people to a new
"location" each year.
The evening includes silent and live auctions, a wine pull, raffle, live music, food and beverages. The dress is
casual, and the tickets are affordable at $65 per person in advance - $75 per person at the door.
Sponsorship opportunities are available. Past destinations include the Wine Country, the Wild, Wild, West
and Hollywood.
Organizational Mission:
Elevating those in need, stranded or homeless to a position of self-sufficiency.
Organizational Description:
Travelers Aid & Homeless Assistance Center dba Upward Transitions has been serving the metropolitan area since
1927, making the organization one of the oldest social services non-profit in the area.
We operate the three diverse programs listed below.
Travelers Aid:
Operates the two information booths at Will Rogers World Airport 365 days a year by an all volunteer staff.
Family Outreach Program:
Operates eight transitional houses for families who are homeless and have minor children. Families may stay
in a transitional house for up to two years.
The families meet once a week with their case manager. The families work on life skills, clearing their credit,
furthering their education, improving employment potential, etc. The families pay rent on a sliding scale and
receive 1/2 the rent when they exit the Transitional Housing Program. The Family Outreach Program administers
an Emergency Shelter Grant to prevent homelessness by assisting with rent and utility payments. We are the
recipient of federal stimulus funding to prevent homelessness through the payment of utilities and rent as well
as funds to rapidly house clients who have recently become homeless.
Community Outreach Program:
Offers a wide variety of programs to help clients who are needy and homeless. Our biggest request for
assistance is for utilities. In FY 2008-09, we received over 17,000 calls for financial assistance to help with
utilities and/or rent. Other services include relocation for victims of domestic violence, assisting stranded
travelers to reach their destination safely, as well as numerous programs for clients who are homeless clients
with the goal of assisting them to become self-sufficient.
Why Partner With Upward Transitions:
- Align With A Well Respected, Community Service Provider
- Enhance Awareness of Issues Facing The Most Vulnerable in Our Community
- Support Upward Transitions' Mission
